  • Puckrup Hall Golf Club – A History

bigpicIn 1991 Country Mansion Hotels Ltd were granted permission to build an 18-hole Golf Course and extensions to the hotel to provide leisure facilities and 70 new bedrooms. The first 7 holes of the Golf Course were on the parkland to the left of Puckrup Lane. The remaining 11 holes were ‘man-made’ on the land to the right of Puckrup Lane running along the A38 to Twittocks House. The Course was designed by Simon Gidman of the Golf Design Partnership.

The Golf Course was officially opened on Thursday, 1 October 1992. Two founder members, Trevor Cross and Keith Prior (Club Captain in 1995-96) were the first to tee off at 8.00am. They had taken the day off work and played 27 holes that day with a ‘very civilised’ lunch in the Hotel. Another founder member, Mike Wilson (Club Captain 2003, Treasurer 2010, Secretary 2011-2014, Chairman 2015-2016) was still serving in the Army in Germany at the time. He travelled over for the opening, being the first to tee off from what was then the par 4 11th, now the par 3 16th.

The first Club Professional was Kevin Pickett with Nigel Whitton and Dave Sinclair as Assistant Pros. The first Pro Shop was in the lodge cottage by the main gate – being close to the 1st Tee (now 17th Tee – see later re the Course). Shortly after the Club opened, the Pro Shop moved into what is now the Main Bar of the Hotel and the The Limes Bar (now the conference rooms on the left of the main entrance to the Hotel) was used as the Club House. The original brochure advises that ‘A wealth of timber and tasteful fittings make the Limes Bar the ideal place to relax either before or after your game – or just to meet friends for a drink and a chat at any time’. Apparently the Limes Bar contained a log fire which made it very cosy in the winter.

There were 3 classes of membership available:-

Founder Membership – Entrance Fee £1450 – Annual Subscription £650
Benefits – Pre-booking tee times up to 4 weeks in advance, 25% discount on Membership of the Leisure Club after a free first year, introduction of up to 20 guests per year at a reduced green fee.

Full Membership – Entrance Fee £975 – Annual Subscription £650
Benefits – Pre-booking of tee times up to 2 weeks in advance, 10% discount on Membership of the Leisure Club, introduction of up to 10 guests per year at a reduced green fee

Weekday Membership – Entrance Fee £500 – Annual Subscription £450
Benefits – Pre-booking tee times up to 48 hours in advance and priority on the waiting list for Full Membership, subject to Handicap!!

Members were each given a number, with the first being Ian & Penny Caves with numbers 1 & 2. Ian Caves donated The Tailby Trophy, in memory of his Grandmother, for the winner of the Ladies Golf Championship and the ladies still play this each year at the same time as the Club Championships. By 1993 there were approximately 100 members, compared with 450 today.

The Seniors Section was formed in 1993 with the Ladies Section a year later.

In 1997 Stakis Hotels took over Puckrup Hall Hotel and Golf Course and substantial changes were made to the course to facilitate the proposed extension to the Hotel.

Looking at the Holes today, the original Course started on 17th, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th (then a Par 4 through to the Green on the Practice Ground), 9th, 10th, 11th, 1st, 18th. The Pars were the same for Men and Ladies but the Stroke Indexes were quite different.

On 26 November 1999 the new Club House was opened by John Conteh (former World Boxing Champion). This part of the hotel was erected on The Mound and permission had to be obtained to remove several mature trees to facilitate this.

In 2000 Hilton Hotels took over Puckrup Hall Golf Club and remain the proprietors to this day.
